Proudlock Associates Welcome New Strategy
to Deliver Life Time Homes
A new government strategy, 'Lifetime Homes, Lifetime Neighbourhoods: A National Strategy for Housing in an Ageing Society' by the Department of Communities and Local Government aims to ensure that all new homes are built to accessible “lifetime homes” standards within the next five years.
From 2011, all new social housing will have to be built to the standards, with regulations to be introduced in 2013 if the private sector has not met “expectations”.
The homes will have to incorporate 16 design features, or lifetime standards, which include wider doorways, walk-in showers, and staircases big enough to accommodate stairlifts.
Tracey Proudlock, founder of award winning disability consultancy, Proudlock Associates welcomed the government announcement, “We have successfully been working with planning authorities and home builders using Life Time Home features for several years now; we have a unique, experienced team of consultants able to advise and guide in this field.”
The strategy also includes a drive to promote “lifetime neighbourhoods”, with guidelines on how developers and councils can improve paving and kerb design, access to public toilets and amenities, street lighting, bus stops, information services, accessible parking bays and public transport. Tracey Proudlock adds “Developers can see our work on inclusive design and the public realm at Barking Riverside www.barkingriverside.co.uk, where site wide access for all, regardless of impairment has been at the heart of this new Thames Gateway Development.
